Process

Tier 1 - Using school-wide assessments, the classroom teacher designs an instructional program and environment that supports individual student achievement.

The Academic Success Team (AST) is the heart of the Blended Model.  The AST consisting of classroom teachers, teacher specialists and administrators, meets weekly to review student case studies for referred students. Classroom teachers refer students to the AST who are not making adequate performance progress despite Tier 1 interventions. AST members professionally review performance data, determine if additional assessments are necessary and prescribe either additional classroom modifications or placement in specific interventions.Following all prescriptions and placements, the AST regularly monitors the student’s performance progress.

Tier 2 is a series of interventions that are designed to provide direct instruction targeted at specific skill development, which will assist the student in reaching grade level performance standards.

Students who have not made sufficient performance progress with Tier 1 and 2 interventions are referred to the Student Study Team (SST).  The SST consisting of Classroom Teacher, Special Educators, Parents, Student and Administrator, meets and reviews the student’s performance and interventions.  The SST prescribes additional modifications interventions or recommends assessment for Special Education Services

Tier 3 are Special Education Services

THE BLENDED MODEL

Eight years ago, Point Arena Schools faced the stark realization that 45% of the students were reading below the 25th percentile.  The District set out to develop a district-wide, systemic reorganization. This new K-12 reform model, which includes state and local initiatives like Reading First and RtI (Response to Intervention), is a blending of all support services (ELD, Special Education, Reading and Math Support) to focus on the academic success of all students through the AST (Academic Success Team) process, use of performance data for planning and prescribed interventions.  Through the Blended Service Model, Point Arena schools have experienced a significant reduction in special education referrals, an increase in students exiting special education and, at the same time, a total turn around in standardized reading test scores.  The achievement gap is narrowing  as 45% of Point Arena students are now reading in the top 25th percentile.  Through the collaboration of all teachers, para-educators and administers our model has gained both county and state recognition.
